Coffee was discovered around 500 A.D. in Ethiopia by a goat herder named Kaladi. In the early 1500’s Buba Budan smuggled coffee beans from Yemen, the only coffee growing country at the time, to the island of Java, Indonesia.

Then in 1550 the Dutch discovered the coffee growing on Java, and started to grow and export the coffee back to Europe. Coffee was a highly prized product and the French wanted it. The French stole a coffee plant and transported it to the Carribean Islands. A lover's gift brought coffee from the Carribean Islands to Brazil and Central and South America.
